Have you ever wondered how much water should you drink a day and get constantly told by your nagging Mum or Aunt to drink more water?

Don’t worry guys it’s not their fault, they simply believe what they are told. In this post I will analyse some recent studies that question this 8 glasses a day myth. I just want to say I firmly believe you should follow your bodies natural instinct instead of a rigid drinking schedule.

How Much Water Should You Drink A Day?

Does Drinking 8-10 Glasses of Water Each Day Feel Natural?

If yes, then go ahead and drink that much. For me though, this violates one of my key principles, eat to live not live to eat. In this case drink to live not live to drink. I simply don’t want to be carrying a bottle with me everywhere I go, or to be constantly at the tap. This is the exact same feeling I had when I use to eat 6 meals a day. If you ever locate any of my old friends from college, they will tell you the discipline I had at eating every 3 hours. It was quite ridiculous looking back. What is even worse, is the added toilet trips that entails this lifestyle.

The Average Person Loses 10 Cups of Water Per Day

So how much water should you drink a day? Does this mean the average person should drink exactly 10 cups of water to replace this? Well no. The average person also gets 4 cups of water directly from his food. Think about it next time you bite into your favourite food. Should the average person then drink 6 cups per day to replace the 10 lost cups of water? Again no.

Tea, coffee, fruit juice and even alcohol count!

Mainstream Conventional wisdom says that these are diuretics and only increase your requirement for water. This simply isn’t true however as these beverages actually add to water intake than subtracting from it. Alcohol and caffeine in coffee and tea only become diuretic when drank in dangerously large amounts. So how much water should you drink a day?

What About This? “If You Are Thirsty, Then It is Too Late”

This again, is another silly idea made up by the mass media. Do you guys really think your body is that silly to give you the warning signal when it is already too late? Do you feel the need to go toilet after it has already happened? Does your petrol light come on to warn you when it’s too late? Why do you think this would be any different? Seriously guys, trust your body more often. Your body often gives you warnings, which you usually just dismiss. Here is a study, which supports what I just said. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6514825?dopt=Abstract.

The study shows that people who waited until they were thirsty, remained just as hydrated as people who drank on a set water schedule. So maybe our natural thirst mechanism does work after all. Do you think we evolved that much from animals?, I am certain animals don’t have a set drinking schedule, but instead rely on their natural instincts. Should we do the same, instead of asking the same boring question how much water should you drink a day?

So How Much Water Should You Drink A Day?

To me some things are more an art than a science. Science will tell you conclusively to drink 8 glasses of water a day. I prefer to listen to my bodies own internal system. When I am thirsty I drink, when I am not I don’t. Human beings require different amounts of different things and water is no different. In the case of water, there are factors such as your activity level, environment (humidity and altitude), body size, age and pregnancy.

If you have been reading, you will now know the answer to the question how much water should you drink a day now. There isn’t a set amount you should be drinking. There is no doubt that water is essential, but seriously guys just start trusting your body. There is a reason this 8 glasses a day propaganda is about. Bottled water is a huge industry and they want your  money. Promoting just trust your thirst mechanism isn’t going to generate sales is it.

Hey nice post, keep them coming. A nice key point you touched on there was to “Listen to your body”. People dont do this regularly enough or at all nowadays, they listen to the media or old wives tales, use mass produced medicine (referring to your common cold remedy article). Its a simple yet effective and often neglected point to listen to your own body. Ive had the flu since saturday and after a full days rest and after listening to my body (when to eat and sleep, etc.) Im now almost 100 %. Good stuff

To expand upon your point of tea and other liquids counting as part of your water intake, so too does pretty much anything you eat. As long as something hasn’t been dehydrated, there is likely going to be some form of water in all food.

How much water is in what you eat? This will vary. Obviously, a watermelon will provide you with more fluids than a steak, but both contribute to replenishing your body’s water levels.
