I personally think a lot of people just sleep too much, including myself up until recently. I used to take catnaps every day and just felt so tired throughout the day. I did overcome this but you will have to wait for another day for me to tell that story. I think a lot of people sleep too much purely out of boredom of life and just certain food groups make you sleepy. Carry on reading for the importance of sleep.

Importance Of Sleep

I reckon those who sleep excessively, are at least mildly depressed but that’s a whole other topic. Just teasing you for now, so make sure you check back regularly to see what could be the root of your tiredness.

Is 8 Hours The Amount of Sleep You Need?

My personal opinion on sleep is that it varies between individuals and their lifestyle choices. I get through my day with about 6-8 hours of sleep per night on average. There are two things to consider about a persons sleep. There is your “Basal Sleep Need” and “Sleep Debt”. There have been 2 studies that show persons basal sleep need is 7 to 8 hours. People don’t differ much in this category but…sleep debt is another story.

What is Sleep Debt and Why is it Important?

Sleep debt is accumulated sleep, lost due to bad sleeping habits or missing sleep for any reason, such as waking up to alarms for work etc. so if your personal basal sleep is 8 hours and you are only getting 5-7 hours of sleep, that 1-3 hours begins to accumulate and this is your total “sleep debt”. If that sleep debt gets to 6-8 hours it is like missing a whole day of sleep.

What If Your Sleep Debt Gets High?

If your sleep debt gets too high, your immune system will weaken. You will get irritable and check this just missing 90 minutes of sleep can result in a 32% reduction in daytime alertness. A 1997 study found that people who slept 4-5 hours per night for one week, needed two full nights of sleep t recover performance, alertness and normal mood. So the cure to recover your sleep debt is to sleep. A no brainer right!

For Those Of You With Bedtime Problems..Namely Insomnia

I discovered some great sleeping techniques while learning about lucid dreaming and out of body experiences. I don’t think I ever had a lucid dream and definitely didn’t have an OBE. I am against pills on the most part, as they have too many side effects, and I prefer to cure problems naturally. Here are 2 great videos on these sleep treatments I was talking about.

To Conclude the Importance Of Sleep

I would still rather sleep too little than too much. I get way more done in the day now, including writing these great posts for you guys, working out, learning about topics of my interest, Spanish, spending quality time with my loved ones. You only get one life so don’t sleep it away, save that for the grave. Remember there is a middle ground; so try to aspire to that. If you have to wake up at 7AM for work, get to bed at the latest 11PM.

Please leave comments, and let me know your opinion on the importance of sleep.

Very good post. Sleep is very important. Also as nice as they are sometimes naps should be avoided I feel. It makes it harder to get to sleep later that night. One more thing as a sports person getting enough sleep is essential as it’s scientifically proven that sleeping too little will have a negative effect on energy levels so a good nights sleep can make all the difference. Good stuff.

Ye spot on ron, i used to nap daily, and just feel tired so often, since i started my new lifestyle I feel so alive ready to tackle the world. How is your recovery going, I got DarwinvTowers, first game of the season, hopefully I get my routine goal against them

I had no idea about sleep debt, that explains a lot about why I feel so dozy a lot of the time. Can you not train your body to function under say 6 hours of sleep if you do it consistently for a year?

    • admin says:

All depends on what your basal sleep need is, if it’s 6 hours, then ye you would be fine, if it happened to be 8 hours, you would be losing 2 hours a night and building up your “sleep debt”.
